Haha, well alhamdulilah, it was one of the best Islamic events I am yet to attend. It was both saturday and sunday, but unfortunately I could only attend the second day. They discussed really interesting topics, some of which have rarely been brought up at major Islamic conventions, such as domestic violence amongst society at large. That was really my favorite lecture, and it was headed by two Imams I have never heard of. One had come from California, and the other a local to Baltimore. It was really interesting, and they went through the Islamic ruling on it and whatnot.
Then, one of my favorite Imams- Imam Abdul-barrey (sp?) Yahya- spoke about raising children, but seeing as most of the audience was teens, he kind of spoke it in a way for youth to understand and whatnot.
And Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, probably my favorite shaykh, spoke about where our loyalties should lie, and whether it is wrong to be patriotic and whatnot. He went through the whole history of the nation-state, and described the differences between loyalty to what existed before nation-states (basically tribes and kingdoms), loyalty to the nation state, and loyalty to religion. In doing so, he showed where loyalties should lie, and I fully agreed with his conclusion, which was basically that you can be patriotic to the state only to the extent that it does not conflict with your loyalty to Islam. You can accept it as a good thing to live here, and you can love your nation, but you can not put your priority in your nation. If you're nation oppresses your religion, you must stand with your religion, as there is nothing inherent that should make you patriotic towards a state other than you being born within the span of lines on a map.
Anyways, overall it was just awesome. The only part I hate is that this girl from another forum saw me there, and I did not see her. That's just embarrassing. She was sitting behind me supposedly and could see me the whole time. Ghhrrr lol *I'm a shy guy*
