Cheney backs Palestinian state

The US vice president has said that a Palestinian state is "long overdue" but has warned Palestinian attacks on Israel "kill the legitimate hopes" of its establishment. Dick Cheney made the comments at a news conference in Ramallah on Sunday, hours after promising Israelis that the United States supported Israel's "right to defend itself".

"A difficult but immutable truth must continue to be told: terror and rockets do not merely kill innocent civilians, they also kill the legitimate hopes and aspirations of the Palestinian people," Cheney said. He added the US was "strongly committed" to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

"As [US] President [George] Bush has said, the establishment of a state of Palestine is long overdue and the Palestinian people deserve it," Cheney said.

Would you tolerate a state on the border with your country, firing rockets into your territory? If Mexicans were chanting "death to the US" shooting missiles, and behaving like beligerents, we would invade yesterday.

If Palestine becomes a country, the Israelis will have every right to wipe 'em out at the first sign of hostilities. No one would tolerate such behaviour.

If Palestine becomes a state, they will be more equipt to work with the IDF and the US to squelch terror attacks by extremists.

How so? Will they have better morals? Will their sense of decency change? How, praytell, does this fantasy work?

Its not a fantasy. You obvious have put more thought into hate than working out the issues. Think about it. How "might" it work Haq?! Instead of constantly attacking, play devils advocate with yourself and give us some possible scenerios that would make this work... other than the extermination of palestinians (or Israelis). And without being so pessimistic and saying doom and gloom it cant work, becuase it must work.

waiting...

While I leave that business to the experts, I really don't see how one can support both sides of the situation. Those countries have been at odds with one another for years, and why not let them decide what is best for each?

Yeah, I see the point Ceshune. The thing is that something must be done to curb the cycle of violence. Israeli conquest will spread it. Palestinian terror attacks on Israel will increase it and undermine the Palestinian authority who doesnt have the resources to squelch them.

I tend to think that a stronger Palestinain Authority can be acheived in statehood who at that point can work with other supporting governments to crack down on suspected terrorists.

That would be the best possible way to achieve peace if leaders of surrounding neighbor countries each tried to work within their own ranks to set logical priorities and apply the strengths of their own individual heritage.

Oh, I agree ceshune. It will also entail the cooperation of the IDF as well, I should think.

If my memory serves me correctly, there was once an offer to relinquish West Bank territory in favor of the Palestinians. It seems incredible that an entire culture of Palestinians are denied a homeland and the efforts to secure the boundaries are still in the "discussion stages" after these many years.
